Glossary of Projection Mapping and Luxedo Terminology
Projection mapping, once the domain of large-scale events and specialized professionals, has now become accessible to homeowners, thanks to Luxedo's innovative all-in-one solution. This groundbreaking advancement has brought the magic of projection mapping right into your living room, making it easier than ever to create stunning visual displays.
While projection mapping might seem complex at first glance, understanding the key terms can make the process much more approachable. To help you get started, we’ve compiled a glossary of some of the most commonly used terms in this exciting field.
Ambient Light
Light that falls on the house that is not from the projector. This most commonly refers to streetlamps, neighbors lighting, and rgb lights.
ANSI-Lumens
Lumens are a unit of measurement that quantifies the strength of a light source. ANSI is a standard evaluation method that is the one of the best ways to understand the actual light strength.
The process of seamlessly using two projectors together, by optimizing the use of shared projection space.
Automated process where your Luxedo device will project patterns while capturing images of the projection using the onboard camera.
Ethernet
A wired connection to a local network, allowing for guaranteed network stability.
FM-Transmitter
A device that receives the audio and broadcasts over an FM radio band within a small area.
Green Screen
A specialized background that helps isolate the subject from a background. Blue and black are also typically used.
HDMI
High-Definition Multimedia Interface. A common kind of HD-ready connection and cable used in projection.
The protective casing that surrounds your projector and various other component features.
Keystone
The ability to alter the corners on the projector to account for an angled surface.
Lens
The part of the projector that focuses the projected light. Higher end projectors have interchangeable lenses. All residential Luxedo come with the lens fixed.
Lens Shift
Setting available on our 6,000 lumen and commercial models that remotely moves the lens in order to adjust positioning of projected image.
Light Shows
A composite show made up of smaller scenes, played in a determined order.
Luxedo is the first all-in-one solution to projection mapping. The name can refer to both the company and to an individual projection-mapping unit.
A website that connects to your shows to broadcast audio, no tuning required!
Mapping
The technique of creating/manipulating projection content to a three-dimensional surface by altering it to fit the shapes on your house.
Mapping Software
A software application that you use to create projection content to fit your mapping template. Luxedo’s proprietary software allows you to edit the video and to map and mask your house all in one.
A technique used within video editors and projection mapping used to isolate or select a specific area to display chosen content or media.

Projection Mapping
a projection technique used to turn objects, often irregularly shaped, into display surfaces for video projection. Mapping specifically refers to the process of aligning pieces of a digital projection with the physical contours, shapes, and features of a surface.
Projector
A device that projects a video/image onto a surface using a high-powered light source.
Render
The last step in video creation, where your software will consolidate all of the composite pieces of your video into one complete file.
The number of pixels in a display, image, or video in each direction.
RS232
An RS232 is a standardized cable for transmitting signals between devices.
Scaling
the process of adjusting the size of a video to make it compatible with different devices or screen sizes. It involves changing the number of pixels in an image, which can be done by increasing or decreasing the resolution.
Videos made within Luxedo’s scene editor. Maximum length of 5 minutes.
Luxedo’s proprietary projection mapping video editor. Use an automatically generated snapshot of your house as the canvas!
A tool within the Luxedo portal that allows you to specify a time for a show to play automatically.
Snapshot
an algorithmically generated image designed to reflect the projection space, produced automatically after calibrating your Luxedo. Used as a canvas in the video editor.
Spotlight
A bright light that illuminates the entire projection area of a projector, useful for adjusting positioning.
Throw Ratio
A measurement of the width of a projector’s image. The lower the throw ratio, the closer a projector can be placed to a surface to create a comparable image (0.8 and lower is considered short throw, 3.0 and above is considered long throw)
